Strategic Plan

2012-2017 Strategic Plan

The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board Strategic Plan 2012-2017, as adopted at the meeting of the Council of Commissioners on June 27, 2012, includes three main orientations that will guide our actions over the next few years. A wide consultation process allowed us to identify the issues and challenges that we will be facing as an organization devoted to student success.

The strategic plan that we are now presenting is the result of a fascinating and impressive teamwork between various players. Indeed, thanks to the invaluable contribution of all our partners, we were able to understand the specific issues facing our school communities and thus be better prepared to meet the needs of our students, our employees and our milieu.

This plan revolves around the values that have been at the heart of our pedagogical and administrative decisions since 1998, and which aim at providing an environment where each student and employee can learn and grow, with respect for diversity, and where student success is the focus of all our initiatives.

Our Vision

The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board believes that all our students deserve our complete commitment to their success.

Our Mission

The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board's mission is to provide a stimulating learning environment, develop accessible educational services, and enable our students of all ages to become responsible independent citizens in their community and beyond.
RESOLUTION # 050323-CA-0130 adopted March 23, 2005

Three orientations, one goal: Student Success

Three main orientations and six objectives clearly emerged. As well, the objectives set forth within these orientations are not only comprehensive; they are reachable and measurable, which was essential to ensure monitoring and evaluation.

It was also important that all stakeholders - students, school board employees, partners, parents, etc. - be able to associate with these orientations and objectives. Since the goal is to ensure the success of every student, it is fundamental that each and every one of us adhere to these orientations and objectives and that they be the focus of each initiative and strategy put forward.

Over the next five years, these strategic orientations and objectives will be supplemented with various strategies that will be developed within the partnership agreement between the School Board and the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. This structure will allow for regular monitoring and evaluation (quarterly, biannual, etc.).

ORIENTATION 1: SUCCESS

Objectives:

1. To support development and implementation of programs that favor literacy

2. To support measures to reach the MELS's goals

This orientation is by far the most important one. It encompasses the next two and aims at ensuring success for all our students. We all know that literacy is an important component of every subject area and is the main indicator of school success. This is why we will maintain our commitment towards the efforts already being undertaken, and encourage the development and implementation of new programs designed to support literacy. Finally, we will make the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) goals our own, namely:

  1. Increased success and qualifications rates before age 20.
  2. Improved Mastery of English and French Second Language.
  3. Improved levels of retention in school and academic success among certain target groups, especially among handicapped students or student with learning or adjustment difficulties.
  4. Increased number of students under the age of 20 enrolled in vocational training.
  5. Healthier and safer school environment.

ORIENTATION 2: WELL-BEING

Objectives:

1. To promote the building of positive relationships at all levels

2. To promote healthy and safe environments

During our consultation sessions, the "human" aspect came up over and over again. It was very important to take this into account since this reality is an integral part of our primary mission. The desire to create challenging, healthy, and safe learning and work environments for all was the focus of discussions. This first orientation stresses the importance of human relationships to encourage and support the development of every person, as well as the quality of the students and employees' environment.

ORIENTATION 3: LEADERSHIP & INNOVATION

Objectives:

1. To promote, support, and increase the implementation of innovative approaches in teaching, learning, and problem solving through leadership

2. To recognize and celebrate innovative approaches

The third orientation centered on educational innovation and technology. This orientation came naturally since we must pursue our efforts to implement new technology across the board and to provide relevant training to our teachers. Innovation is at the heart of new programs and pedagogical approaches developed to meet the different learning styles. It is also important to recognize and support the leaders in all the different sectors that are driving forces behind innovation.
