Philosophy / Mission
Crestview Elementary School's vision is to encourage a co-operative venture that fosters the individual growth and potential of the whole child (physical, intellectual and emotional), in a secure, stimulating and inclusive environment. Our mission is to instil in our students a love of learning, strong self-esteem, and respect for others, while preparing them for the challenges they may face in our diverse society. The goal of this vision is to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning, where the child looks forward to coming to school and parents are secure that their child is in a safe environment. The student is the center of his/her learning. Teachers, parents and adults around him/her nourish his/her physical, intellectual and emotional needs.
Crestview was built in 1962, and is located in Chomedey, Laval, a suburban community 30 km north of downtown Montreal. We have a student body of 350 ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Our building is situated on a 200 000 square foot lot fronted by mature maples. Our schoolyard features a soccer field, baseball diamond, basketball courts, playground equipment and a paved area with many schoolyard games painted on the asphalt, including a giant map of Canada.
The Crestview Governing Board meets once a month during the school year. These are "open" meetings. Our active Parent Participation Organization (PPO) provides support to our educational project through fundraising and volunteering.
Crestview's programs of study make it a unique school in our board. We offer a bilingual program with 50% French in Kindergarten and 40% French in Cycles One, Two and Three. In addition there are six Self-Contained Special Education Classes. The Early Intervention Centre, part of our Special Education Department, caters to the needs of students with Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders. We offer Music and Visual Arts Programs to all our students, extra curricular activities after school and a Saturday and Summer Program for students at risk.
Crestview offers school-based day care services from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Crestview has a computer lab, a library, and a gymnasium. We offer the services of a psychologist, a social worker, a nurse, a speech-language pathologist, and an occupational therapist. Our staff comprises Resource, Music, Physical Education, French and Special Education specialists.
