Philosophy / Mission

Our school's educational project has established as its aim that every student be able to read independently and comprehend fully no later than Cycle Three as well as to maintain and develop his/her interest and desire for lifelong learning through reading. LES also promotes an active environment where children can engage in a variety of activities to challenge their abilities and interests, i.e. sports, drama, choir, computers and leadership skills.

General Information

Laurentian Elementary was established in 1927 and is located approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Laval. Despite the fact that our school services such a wide territory, including many small villages and towns, it is a community school. There are currently 441 students attending LES from Kindergarten to Cycle Three.

Parent Participation

We are most fortunate to have a very active parental participation. Our Governing Board meets 7 to 8 times a year. In addition, parents have established a non-profit organization called the Friends of L.E.S or F.O.L.E.S. which has as its objective to raise funds and provide for the needs of the students and the school. Among just a few of their projects, they subsidize field trips for all the classes as well as theatre groups to our school. They also sponsor the publishing of a yearbook. We also have an impressive list of parents who volunteer in the school, assisting students in a variety of areas.

LES is proud to offer such programs as bilingual in Kindergarten and Cycle Two, Music - from Cycle One to Cycle Three, before and after school day care, a volunteer program, student recognition program as well as a literacy program in Kindergarten. In addition, athletics and sportsmanship are emphasized through intra-school teams and through a leadership program at school.

Laurentian Elementary is fortunate and proud of our excellent facilities including lots of space for French and resource specialists, a school-based day care, a superb gym and playground as well as a complete computer laboratory and library. Each classroom is equipped with a computer as is the library. We have the services of a psychologist, social worker, resource teachers, library technician and computer resource person.

Events and activities

Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities involving sports: track & field gymnastics, soccer, basketball, cross-country run. In addition, students may participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony, Christmas concert and an Arts Festival at the end of the year. Our choir not only performs at our school but for local churches as well. Classes participate in a number of annual field trips to Quebec City, Montreal and local attractions. An orientation activity is organized with Grade 6 students of other schools that feed into the same high school - Laurentian Regional High School. Several activity days are organized during the year, including Winter Carnival and Track and Field Day. For the month of May children in all grades are involved in a swim program which makes them eligible for their Red Cross badges.

Other Information

Our School Success Plan emphasizes language development in Kindergarten and Cycle One. Each class in Kindergarten and Grade 1 is seen twice a year by a team, including resource teachers, and a psychologist to determine progress and strategies for improvement.

Life values like honesty, courage and trustworthiness are learned through the development of monthly school-wide themes. At the end of each month, students are recognized in a school assembly for having consistently met school expectations and for demonstrating life values.
