Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School

Pierre Elliott Trudeau School is one of the newest English schools in the province of Québec (January 2002). It is located in the city of Blainville, north of Montreal. At Pierre Elliott Trudeau School we aim to provide a safe and positive environment. We have high expectations and encourage our students to achieve with praise. We have a shared purpose and mission which is realized through effective planning and monitoring of student progress, and through parent and community support. We are on the cutting edge of all current research in what we know is best for the students of today. Through a team approach to teaching and learning, and with an integration and multi-age classroom approach, our students experience great success in education.

On September 31st 2014, student enrolment stands at 391 students; a few less students than last year at this time. There are presently 65 students registered in kindergarten, an increase of 20 students since September 2013. There are presently 114 students in cycle 1. The other two cycles are made up of approximately 105 students each. There are two split classes; one 4/5 and the other 5/6. The rest of the classes are by single level. The school was built for 441 students. The space is becoming more limited and there is sometimes a lack of space to accommodate special events, activities or professionals coming to work in the school. Approximately ninety percent of the students have English or French as a mother tongue. There are few ethnicities in the school. Most students come from middle class families.

Our zone is serviced by eight buses. The school is opened from 6:30 am to 6:15 pm in order to accommodate travelling parents who are often caught in traffic. Some of the students may be at school for close to twelve hours.

General Information

Pierre Elliott Trudeau School is one of the newest English schools in the province of Québec (January 2002). It is located in the city of Blainville, north of Montreal. We are on the cutting edge of all current research in what we know is best for the students of today. Through a team approach to teaching and learning, and with a multi-age classroom approach, our students experience great success in education.

Parent Participation

The Parent Participation Organization (PPO) is a very active organization in the school. This group of parents organizes the photo day, the book fair, the open house celebration, the grade six graduation, the fundraisers and many other events that capture the interest of our students and bring great benefits to our school.

The Governing Board meets once a month by choice because we are a new school and have many policies and procedures to develop and put into place. They are a conscientious group of parents, teachers and staff who focus on the needs of the school and make decisions in the best interest of the children who attend Pierre Elliott Trudeau School.

Programs and Equipment

We offer a diverse program that educates the whole child. This includes a Physical Education program with a course in Health Education, and a French Second Language program that caters to the needs of our community by offering cycle 1 Art in French as well as regular FSL courses to all students from kindergarten to grade 6.

Our resource teachers work with students with learning disabilities and focus on both early reading intervention and later intervention to support students moving into the High Schools years. This year, they are also supporting students who struggle with Math.

All of our programs integrate technology and research-based studies for students. 95% of the classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards and there are computers in all the classrooms as well as a brand new lab. There are also 20 I-pads and a few laptops available for students with special needs and for special projects. Most of the teachers have been issued their own laptop for work purposes. The school WIFI has been updated in October 2014 and is now available for portable tools in all locations of the school.

We have a well-equipped library and a part-time librarian who assures a regular update of the book inventory and who organizes book fairs twice a year.

Services

We have two resource teachers on site who work in the classrooms with students who have special needs, as well as a psychologist and a speech and language therapist who are on site once a week. The school is also visited by a CLSC nurse, a dental hygienist, an Occupational Therapist, the community police and the Blainville fire department on various occasions or when there is a need or an activity.

The school also has a daycare which offers services from 6:30 am to 6:15pm. The present enrolment is 118 students. Most students are registered full time. The school is fortunate to have a caring and educational school-based day care where children are encouraged and motivated in many aspects of daily life.

The school has an on-site caterer who serves hot and cold lunches on a daily basis.
