 Dear Parents,

Just like you, I want to make sure that your child is able to make the best possible use of this school year. One of the tools that I will be using to check on your child’s learning is portfolio assessment.

Throughout the year, your child and I will select and insert materials into the portfolio. I will be choosing and commenting on pieces that show how your child’s learning is unfolding. Your child will also be selecting works for the portfolio. As we talk about reasons for choosing particular works, your child will further develop abilities to think critically and solve problems. At the same time, I will have a better understanding of your child’s thoughts and values.

In the portfolio, I will also be saving checklists and your child’s own assessments of reading and writing, as well as notes from you and your child’s learning.

When you look at your child’s portfolio, you will be able to see at a glance how your child is developing as a reader, writer, and thinker. You are welcome to chat with me about your child’s learning – and see your child’s portfolio – anytime!
