HOLY ROSARY SCHOOL’S RULES OF LIFE

[HOMEPAGE]

PHILOSOPHY:

The Holy Rosary School community believes that by demonstrating respect and responsibility, we can create a safe, caring and collaborative environment that promotes life-long learning, and celebrates the uniqueness of all individuals. We believe that all students have the right to learn. No student has the right to choose behaviour that infringes upon the rights of others.

The development of a sense of self-discipline in each of our students is an important aspect of our discipline policy.  Discipline is meaningful when it is self-imposed or self-controlled.

As educators we recognize the primary role of parents as the first and best teachers of their children. We also recognize the partnership that needs to exist between home and school if students are to benefit fully from their education. In order for any policy to be effective, it is necessary that the school have the parents’ support and co-operation in teaching our children to make the right choices.

Members of the  Holy Rosary school community have the following “Rights and Responsibilities”:

  1. We have the right to be safe and the responsibility to permit others to feel safe.

 [top]

·         Members of the school community will learn and observe the rules of safety to ensure their safety and that of others.  These rules apply to the classroom, schoolyard, hallway, lunchrooms, bus, street and field trips.

·         Potentially dangerous objects must be kept at home (i.e. matches, lighters, laser pointers, knives etc.)

Violence Prevention in our School:

A zero acceptance of violence exists in all schools. Our school and Board are governed by the Safe Schools Policy. We intend to foster and maintain a safe environment for students, staff and the community through the implementation of effective measures to deal with violence.

We do not accept in our school:

·         To cause injury to any person

·        To use words or body language to threaten or intimidate others

·        The possession or use of any weapon

·        The use of any object to threaten or intimidate another person;

·        Play-fight as this may lead to injuries

  1. We have the right to be respected and to be treated with dignity, and the responsibility to treat others in a similar manner.

  • Members of the school community will behave in a courteous and respectful manner. Insubordination, inappropriate language and rudeness will not be accepted.

  • Members of the school community will respect the rights of fellow members.  Behavior that could cause emotional and physical harm will not be accepted. (i.e. fighting, bullying, name-calling, yelling at someone, swearing, insults and teasing).

While our goal is for all of us to practice self-discipline and show respect for others and for property, occasionally we may forget and may cause harm to ourselves and to others.  It is therefore important that we all understand that there will be consequences for unacceptable behaviour.

§         Written reminders of our beliefs and values

§         Peer support to learn and practice behaviours

§         Adult support to learn and practice behaviours

¼     Teacher/student

¼     Daycare/lunch monitor/student

¼     Principal/student

¼     Adult/adult

§         Parent support to learn and practice behaviours

§         Special work assignment to learn and practice behaviours

§         Removal of privileges

§         Reflection time in the detention room

Consistent misbehavior or serious offenses:

Every student starts off the year with 10 merit points. Points may be removed by the administration depending on the offense. Any point(s) removal may lead to the following;

§         Reflection time in the detention room

§         Special work assignment to learn and practice behaviours

§         Removal from school – student must return to school with parent(s)

§         Involvement of other services

§         0 points = removal from school & special behaviour intervention plan established with the collaboration of the parents, staff and student.

* The administration reserves the right to exercise any of the above options prior to any loss of points.

Visitors to the School

The safety of everyone in the school and the efficiency of school require careful control of visitors. Individuals on school property not having anything to do with the functioning of the school will be asked to leave.  All visitors to the school, including parents, must use the main entrance and report to the administration immediately upon entering the building, and receive an “authorization pass” to circulate in the building if applicable.
