September 30th: Photo Day for all students and Staff Member. It is very imporant for all students to be present on that day as individual photos and group activity photos will be taken.

September 18th is Curriculum Night. The evening will start at 6:30 and will end at 8:00. Come meet the teachers and find out information on what is going on in our school. See you there!

October

October 31st: There will be an Halloween dance at the school at 7:00 pm. The tickets will be on sale from October 21st to October 30th. The tickets are sold for $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Students will be able to buy snacks during the evening. Each students is also able to bring one guest that will need to bring an identification card with them on the night of the the danse.

October 25th: Deadline to submit your order for school photos. If you wish to order, please write the name of your child on top of the envelope and return it to school with cash only. Your child can drop it at any offices.

September 30th to October 4th:Week against bullying and violence in school: The MELS just launched the theme for the Week against bullying and violence in school (Semaine contre l'intimidation et la violence à l'école): Branché sur le positif. It will take place from September 30 th to October 4 th. The theme makes reference to positive cyber behavior. They have also launched a website to provide tools for teachers, parents and students at www.branchepositif.gouv.qc.ca.  The website is only in French for now, but is still worth sharing as it has valuable information and great video capsules.

New parent Group For SWLSB: ARCH (Accepting, Reaching, Caring, Helping). ARCH is the latest pro-diversity initiative of the SWLSB. This purpose of this parent group is to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender families, however it is open ...to any parents or staff wishing to support diversity within our Board. The first meeting of the ARCH group will held at the SWLSB administrative centre located at 235 montée Lesage in Rosemère, at 7 P.M. on October 29th.

November 7th: JHS will be hosting an important information meeting for parents. The meeting should not last more than an hour and a half. Information on what high school is all about will be given and a presentation on cyber bullying will also be presented. Please see the flyer attached. The meeting is geared towards sec 1 and 2 but feel free to drop by if you think this information will be good for you. Please confirm your presence by e-mailing your answer at nanwar@swlauriersb.qc.ca.November 12th: Visit form the Granby zoo. This year all sec1 are able to assist a presentation on owls. The presentation will be period 3.

 

November 15th: Cooking Class in Montreal. See below for more inofrmation. This time the students will be doing Sushis. Students must have their transportation if they are planning to attend as it is a ped day.

 

November 21st: All sec 1 will have a workshop with La maison Jean Lapointe. This is a woskshop on drugs and substance abuseprevention.

 

Week of November 25th: Some students with Mrs. Tara Grant will have the oppurtunity to work on Slam Poetry with Mr. David Hodges during the week. the results should be great!

 

November 29th: Presentation for sec 1 and WOTP with Daniel Prenoveau, music artist.

 

November 26th: JHS will be holding a movie night for students who are interested. It is an after school movie trip to the Colossus in Laval. Students will have the choice of the movie they want to attend and they are approximately two and a half hours long. Students will need to be picked up at school at 10:30 pm. the deadline to submit the form is Novemeber 22nd. Click on the following link to see the permission slip.

 

November 27th: Parent Teacher interview for the first report card. This year, please note that all teachers will be in the gym for the meeting. It will be a new experience which we hope you will enjoy. Save the date.

December

Movember Camapaign: Once more JHS has organized a wear a mustache day. All students were able to wear a mustache for a dollar. In only one day, we were able to raise $215. A donation was made to the Movember Canada Association. Congrats JHS.

Christmas Baskets: With the scavenger hunt, we were able to gather food to create at least six Christmas Baskets. All baskets will be prepared this week this week and will be distributed on December 20th.

December 11th Soccer Tournament: JHS was well represented on the soccer tournament that took place on December 11th. The results were amazing and they are available on the SIr Wilfrid Laurier School Board website under the SWLSB league. JHS ROCKS!

Winter Camp in Arundel for all secondary one: January 8th, 9th and 10th, all secondary one and peer advisors are going on a three days winter camp in Arundel. The goal is to get all secondary one students together to create bonds that will last all throughout their high school experience. All students will also have a chance to practice some interesting winter activities. What a nice way to start the New Year! Information has been sent home with the students. We are expecting all answers back by December 20th.

January 15th: Governing Board Meeting at 7:00 pm in the CLC room.

January 17th : Seconadry 3 students will have the chance to welcome a guest speaker in their class during the day. Lieutenant Anthony Di Carlo will be present to talk about his experience in Haïti. This presentation will connect to the book secondary 3 students are reading in English. You will find below a description of the Lieutenant's experience:

 

Lieutenant (Lt) Anthony Di Carlo is an Infantry Officer for the Canadian Forces Army Reserves Regiment, Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal located in downtown Montreal. As a citizen-soldier since 2008, Lt Di Carlo has been pursuing his military profession while at the same time his civilian profession as an external auditor for the international accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). In January 2013, Lt Di Carlo was selected to participate as a member of the Canadian Contingent who were to be fully integrated with the Brazilian Contingent, for the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti (commonly known as MINUSTAH). While in Haiti, Lt Di Carlo assisted in the duties and tasks relating to a UN Civilian-Military Coordination (CIMIC) Officer. The Canadian Contingent's mission in Haiti was for a duration of 5 months; running from late June to late November 2013.

January 21st: All secondary four students in General Science and the Sec 5 students in Physics and Chemistry will have a guest speaker during the first period. Mr. Yannick Bergeron will come to JHS to do some very intersting Chemistry experience.

 

January 21st : Our senior boys basketball team will be going on the tournament that will take place at LRHS. Stay tune for the results of the tournament!

 

January 31st: All of our soccer teams will be going on the tournament that will take place at RHS. Stay tune for the results of the tournament!

 

January 31st: La Bibitte Mobile will be visiting all secondary one classes in the afternoon. All secondary one students will have the chance to see a lot of interesting insects and a couple of tarantulas .

 

Photography Club: 21 students from JHS will have the chance to take some photo workshops with real professionals from now until the end of the year. The final product of the photography club will be on an exposition during the award ceremony at the end of the school year. We are all very eager to see the final result. Their first workshops will be on January 15th and 22nd.

April

April 2nd: It will be a regular school day and it will be a day 5.

 

April 4th : We will be holding a mock election in school. All students will be allowed to vote for one of the candidates running for Joliette. They will be able to experience what it means to go vote. The results will be compiled and announced in school on Tuesday April 8th.

 

April 7th: It will be a ped day because of the elections. There is no school for all students

 

April 10th: The talent show will be presented to students during 4th period. Family, friends and the community are invited to see the great performances of our students at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be sold 5$ at school during lunch hour starting Tuesday April 1st. Tickets will be sold $10 at the door the night od the show. Hope you can all make it!

 

April 14th: This week begins the pichenotte tournament. If you are interested in participating, please see miss Iachetta in room 208. There are prizes to be won so let's play!

 

 

April 15th: The students and teachers involved in the California Trip will be leaving for their trip in the morning.

 

April 17th: It will be a regular school day and it will be a day 8.

 

April 16th and 17th: The secondary 5 students will be able to reserve and purchase theoir grad ring. They will have to go to room 105 from 12h00 nto 13h00 to see Mrs. Lafortune. Students who are ordering a ring will have to give a 50% cashdown on these two dates. All students were given the catalog earlier.

NYC: The trip to New York will take place. The students and teachers will be laeving from May 1st to May 3rd

May 5: All secondary 2 will be going to the Redpath Museum in Montreal for a science related field trip.

 

May 5: Secondary 4 will be participating in a mock trial within their regular classes.

 

May 8: Our peer advisors will be going to Rawdon Elementary school and Joliette Elementary school to visit the grade 6 students that will be our futureJHS students.

 

May 9: The grade 6 will come to JHS to take part in a half day with the peer advisors.

 

May 9: Secondary 4 Science students will have the chance to see a video conference on an autopsy.

 

May 14: Secondary 3 Science students will have the chance to see a video conference on an autopsy

 

May 15: There will be a POP career fair for all the school. Students in POP class have prepared an information booth on different career plan that they will showcase for our students. This is a great iniative and an excellent way to learn about different carreers through the work of their peers. Watch the facebook page for great pictures of that event.

 

May 16: All secondary 1 will leave for a walking tour in old Montreal and a visit to the Pointe-à-Callière Museum. The cost of the trip is $10.

 

May 19: Victoria day therefore the school is closed.

Information about Field Trips

New York Trip: JHS is organizing a New York trip again this year. If you are interested, please have your child go to the school store and pick up the permission slip. You can also click on the link below and download the information. The trip will be from Thursday, May 1 to Saturday May 3, 2014. The total cost of the trip is $320 (includes entrance fees, accommodations, breakfast, transportation, and medical insurance). A deposit of $160 is expected by Monday, December 16th, 2013.
