New Summer Library Program
at Laurentia Elementary
As part of our School Success Plan, our school embarked
on an exciting new project to offer library services to our students
and families during the summer months.
A dedicated group of staff volunteers opened the school library several times
per week for our school community. This special project supports our school
goals of literacy and students involved in their own learning. This was a great opportunity for our students to have access to
all of our English and French books and those purchased through
the Library Initiative this year. It also gave our new Kindergarten
students another opportunity to visit our school before they arrive
officially in the new school year.
Next year, we hope to also offer access to our new media computers.
Special thanks to Mrs. O’Keefe, our Resource Teacher, who spearheaded
this project, as one of our school success action items through
our Governing Board. What a great initiative!

News from Laurentia Elementary
On April 10th, Laurentia Elementary School celebrated the re-opening
of our newly renovated Library. There are many new, interesting
books for everyone and the library space is much larger and more
inviting for all our students and staff. It’s a great space to
do some research, read with a volunteer or relax and enjoy a good
book!

This library project has been very special to everyone here at
Laurentia and we really appreciate all the support from the Sir
Wilfrid Laurier School Board. Our staff, students, parents and
volunteers have worked diligently since early in the school year
to make this project a great success! Well done, everyone!
When the Alouettes came to Laurentia
By Student Reporter Jennifer
On Thursday, April 13th, six of the Montreal Alouettes came to
our school. One Alouette went to each of the classes. They talked
about respect and responsibility. After the class visits they went
to the gym to play a game of basketball against the teachers and
some of the students.
If you remember, some time ago, we wrote an essay on why our school
is cool. Well, the top 5 essays were written by: Florence Lizotte,
Francis Babin, Veronique Averill-Monette, Jennifer Boulanger and
Janna Florant. The winner was Florence. She won 2 tickets to an
Alouettes game.
Afterwards they gave out signed cards and then they left. We had
a very good day!
Laurentia Book Fair
A special thank
you to Mrs. White, all the volunteers and all of you who bought books.
Our book fair was a great success! We will be purchasing lots of
new books with the proceeds and its just in
time to be part of our Library Project in the new year.

Handheld
Computer Forum
By
Florence and Emman
We
participated in a focus group session at Rosemere High School. This brings people who are
interested in one subject together. We discussed handheld computers and
how they can help students to learn.
We
researched some information on the topic. We learned that handhelds are
tiny computers. One that is very popular is the Palm One. It has a
calculator, address book, note book, mail, internet, a dictionary and
you can write texts on it. You can also tell the weather and it
can be an agenda and a way of communicating with others.
At
first we were nervous but at the end we were not. It was very fun
and very interesting and we loved it a lot!

A
New Jungle Gym at Laurentia!

As
some of you may have noticed, our old playground equipment had to be
removed because of safety concerns. Fortunately, the Sir Wilfrid
Laurier School Board answered our plea for help and have installed a brand new beautiful set for the
students of Laurentia. The children
were thrilled and are enjoying it everyday! Thanks SWLSB!
