PHOENIX ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
This programme is tailored to the individual needs of the student. Each student’s schedule is based on the courses he or she requires in order to complete a high school graduation certificate (D.E.S.) or to qualify to enter a professional programme (D.E.P.). Others are thinking of CEGEP and need to fulfil those requirements. The semester starts with a two-day orientation trip. This is an excellent way to build rapport among students and teachers. After the orientation, each teacher becomes an advisor for about twelve students. The student and advisor meet formally once a week and informally, as the need arises, to discuss academic progress and commitment to personal growth. All courses are given in less than half the time available in a regular high school. This reduced allocation allows the students to catch up on time lost earlier in their school careers. This is especially attractive to students who are 17 or 18 years old but still need courses at the Secondary III level. They can be with their peers and feel more comfortable. Covering a whole year’s work in a compressed amount of time often requires some encadrement and a certain intensity. To begin with, classes are smaller. The staff meets and assesses each student’s progress once a week. Work is always checked, and feedback given immediately. Attendance is carefully monitored. The rules are basic, concise, and simple and thoroughly explained to the students at interview time and during the orientation trip. |
