What types of students go to Phoenix?

Students who are accepted to Phoenix are on average between 16 and 18 years of age and for a variety of reasons feel an alternative program will better help them. Our students are committed to self-reflection and positive change.

Where is Phoenix Alternative?

Phoenix Alternative is located at 1105 Victor-Morin in Duvernay, Laval. For links to maps and bus routes click here.

How do I know Phoenix is the right choice for me?

Typically, Phoenix students are between 16 and 18 years old and have been unsuccessful at completing their high school education in another school.  Phoenix only offers Sec IV and V courses with the exception of Sec. III Math.

How do I apply to Phoenix?

Phoenix has an application process for both our Academic (daily school) and Career Exploration programmes. First, the student must phone the school to schedule an appointment for an interview with the staff.  On the day of the interview, students will also complete a short essay in English and French.

When do I call for an interview?

Phoenix runs two semesters per year.  To apply for the September-January semester, students should phone the school the first week of June or second week of August. To apply for the February- June semester, you should call us the second week of January.

What will I be asked in my interview?

Students are essentially asked about the circumstances that have led them to an alternative school. We would like to get to know you and ask questions about your past and present. Phoenix operates on openness and trust and we require you to be completely forthcoming with us. Rarely are we surprised. We have heard almost everything in our time and your history does not affect whether or not you are accepted. Your past experiences are important for us to know so that we can determine how best to help you.

What are the essays that I will be asked to write?

To best help students, we need to know where they are in terms of their learning. You will be asked to write two short essays on the day of your interview. One essay is in English and one essay is in French. Follow the instructions carefully and do your absolute best.

I’ve heard that there is a camp if I am accepted. What is that about?

Because we believe in creating an atmosphere of trust, family, and safety, we go to a 2-day/ 1-night  camp which is a mandatory team-building activity. At camp in the Laurentians, we get to know one another and quickly begin to welcome you as a part of the Phoenix Family.
