On Feb. 15, Ms.
Lorenz, Ms. Adams, Ms. Minty, Ms. Charbonneau and many staff
members presented a cheque of $15,028 to the Children's Wish
Foundation!! None of this would have been possible without
the hard work of the students and staff and community who
got involved. Our wish child, Kiara, will be able to go on
her dream trip to Hawaii as a result!

On February 9th, 2017,
Coach Andy Walker and Coach Ryan Boutara, of ‘The RHS Soccer
Concentration Program’, hosted a ‘Ted Talk style’ event called
‘Maximizing Learning for Student-Athletes by Knowing How the Brain
Works’. Michael Quinn, Science and Technology Consultant at SWLSB
gave a talk called ‘The Soccer (Football) Brain: A User Manual’.
Claudie Lebel, History and French teacher at RHS, gave a talk called
‘Learning to Learn’. Students learned ways in which neuroscience
itself manifests on the soccer field, including ‘the old vs. the new
brain’, ‘sleep hygiene’, ‘exercise and the brain’, ‘attention and
awareness’, ‘the effects of stress on the brain’, ‘best and worst
times for learning’, ‘neuroplasticity’, and ‘visualization and
mental rehearsal’. Students also learned about mnemonics, and
the techniques of ‘chunking’, the role of music and rhythm in
memory, use of acronyms, the effects of multitasking through
devices, and organizational tools’

Ms. Delorme`s WOTP
students recently solicited donations, raised funds through TCBY
sales and assembled 200 Birthing Kits! The kits were distributed in
Haiti where many mothers for reasons of isolation, cultural choice
or poor transportation often give birth at home. Birthing Kits give
mothers the resources to reduce infection and the incidence of
infant and maternal mortality.

A HUGE thank you to Decarie Motors, and Mr.

Supervisor, for hosting our WOTP students on January 13!
The kids spent the day visiting the new state-of-the-art

about great cars and getting inspired. At the end of
their visit, they were spoiled with surprises from Bentley
and Aston Martin!

WE Day combines the
energy of a live concert with the inspiration of incredible stories
of leadership and change. This stadium-sized event—held in 14 cities
in the US, Canada and the UK—brings together world-renowned speakers
and performers with tens of thousands of youth to celebrate the
power of service. This year, twenty-nine RHS students along with Mr.
Palmarella, Ms. Chang and Ms. Damoulianos spent the day in Ottawa
participating in the Free the Children Event - WE Day!
|
|
More WE-DAY news! Mr.
Sorg and his students visited the Theatre St-Denis for an
unparalleled event that brought together world-renowned speakers,
A-list performers, and tens of thousands of youth and celebrated a
year of action that transformed communities and changed lives.

During the last
week of January, a bright group of Sec. 1 students welcomed Maître
Gretchen Timmins into their class to take part in a mock criminal
trial. In the scenario, a teacher had “borrowed” the laptop of a
colleague, only to find herself taken to court for theft. While the
jury found her guilty, she was grateful that the (very wise) judge
overturned the ruling.
Throughout the workshop, students learned the differences between
civil and criminal trials, the roles of lawyers, and the training
that goes into working in this field. They remained highly engaged
and spoke very positively of the experience.
