Philosophy / Mission
St-Paul's philosopy is based on 3 priorities for the school: Safety, Respect & Academic Excellence. Every effort is made to ensure that every child is as safe as he or she would be at home. Respect is the priority that ensures the school remains a peaceful and caring environment where every child enrolled is treated with kindness. Academic excellence is the cornerstone of all activity in the school.
PREAMBLE
The Education Act of Quebec was changed by Law 180. This law created a Governing Board for each school. One of its important functions is to approve the school’s educational project. The educational project deals with activities involving a change in the pupils’ regular schedule; the modes of the implementation of the Régime Pédagogique; the rules and regulations for school conduct and the school’s budget.
The school Principal, under the authority of the Director General of the School Board, is responsible for the pedagogical activities and administration of the school. The Principal shall assist the Governing Board in the exercise of its functions as to the development of the Educational Project of the school. The Principal must promote the cooperation of the parents, pupils and staff, as it applies to their participation in the life of the school community.
OUR SCHOOL PROJECT
St. Paul Elementary School is an English school under the jurisdiction of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board. Its student population is housed in two (2) buildings located at 2425 Honfleur and 1305 L’Assomption, Duvernay, Laval, H7E 1Y3.
St. Paul Elementary School offers Catholic Religious and Moral Education, Moral Instruction or Protestant Moral and Religious Instruction program for pupils whose parents would prefer this as an alternative to the Catholic Religious program being offered.
St. Paul follows the Ministry of Education programs and offers instruction to children between the ages of five (5) to twelve (12), Grades K to 6. It also offers a Pre-K program as well as an MEQ Day Care program.
St. Paul offers approximately 30% of its program in French.
The school offers an extensive activity program necessitating the use of a park, playground and field located adjacent to the schoolyard. The overall aspiration of the Educational Project of St. Paul School is to promote better
Communication.
Four main areas of expertise have been identified as priorities. Listed are Oral Communication, Technology, Written Communication and Interpersonal Relationships.
- Oral Communication encompasses improving the quality of verbal skills through a better understanding of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, in both English and French in every day situations, improving the pupils’ abilities to speak in public and continuing to provide the opportunity to participate in the P.E.L.O. program.
- Technology will foster higher standards of skills. All the pupils will be provided with a learning environment to help them develop computer skills which will support and be used as a tool for research and communication via the use of Internet and e-mail. There is in place a set of specific objectives and criteria at different grade levels as a guideline to develop specific computer skills adapted for our school. This approach is designed to enhance written skills.
- Written Communication is encouraged to improve the pupils’ writing abilities by applying the grammar, spelling and vocabulary taught and learned in the Language Arts.
- Interpersonal Skills are developed through the teaching of proper manners and respect for rules and good behavior, and the correct use of language.
-The Educational Project of the school shall be defined, implemented and periodically evaluated, in collaboration with parents, staff and other members of the school community.
The school is an educational institution whose objective is to provide an overall academic and social environment that will foster the maximum personal growth of the pupils under its jurisdiction.
The school is an extension of the home and is directly involved in the total development of the pupils under its care. Some common objectives for both school and parents should be:
1. Pupils should feel good about themselves and each other.
2. Pupils should feel confident and secure with those adults charged with their care.
3. Pupils should develop morally and socially as well as physically and mentally.
4. Pupils should respect the similarities and differences of their fellow students which comprise their community.
5. Pupils should have achievable, yet challenging, goals in their developmental, moral, social, physical and intellectual growth process.
6. Pupils should be stimulated to acquire the skills and knowledge that assist them in developing good study and work methods and the ability to think for themselves in order to allow them to achieve their goals.
