\u201cStudents should not pay for government mismanagement,\u201d says Chairperson James Di Sano<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rosem\u00e8re, June 26, 2025 \u2013<\/strong> The Council of Commissioners has formally adopted a resolution condemning the Qu\u00e9bec government\u2019s $570 million cuts to public education, warning that the measure will directly harm students and staff while undermining the very foundation of public schooling in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cThese aren\u2019t just numbers on a balance sheet, they represent front-line staff, classroom support, special needs and mental health resources, and ultimately student success,\u201d said James Di Sano, himself a proud graduate of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cMy oath is to my school board and to the students and stakeholders we serve. I refuse to hinder the education of our students. I refuse to make them pay a price for the provincial government\u2019s mismanagement of public funds.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The resolution, brought forward by Chairperson Di Sano, denounces the cuts as \u201cdamaging, inexcusable, and in direct contradiction to the stated goal of protecting student services,\u201d and calls for the government to reverse them immediately.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWe are being told to do more with less while those in power reward themselves,\u201d said Chairperson James Di Sano. \u201cThis is not leadership. It is a breach of public trust, and our students, especially those requiring additional support, will pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Council of Commissioners reaffirmed its commitment to student-centred education and pledged to continue advocating for transparency, equity, and responsible investment in Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s public schools.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

With a workforce of more than 2,000 employees, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board is the third-largest English school board in the Province of Qu\u00e9bec and has a graduation rate of 87.4%. Its territory comprises the administrative regions of Laval, Laurentides, and Lanaudi\u00e8re. The school board provides preschool, elementary, secondary and adult education, together with vocational training services to over 14,000 students in 36 schools and 4 centres. It also offers business training services.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
