 PHYSICAL EDUCATION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM ( P.E.L.P.)

 

The basic physical education leadership program is designed for those students who want to excel in sports and the organization of sports activities, while developing important leadership skills. The success of the program is based on the objective of promoting student Sociability – working with people;Autonomy – learning to work alone;

Confidence- building pride and self respect;Responsibilities – learning to be accountable for something;Education – the administration side of sports; Dedication – knowing that they make a difference.

The leadership program is offered to the secondary one and two students:

SECONDARY 1

For the secondary one student, the leadership program is sports oriented. Students are required to do a lot of cooperative work within the setting of individual and team sports, with the major focus on promoting 8 major sports for the year; broken down to two sports per semester.

The sports chosen would fulfill the following categories:

  • An outdoor sport
  • An indoor sport
  • An outdoor education sport
  • A team sport
  • An individual sport
  • An Olympic sport
  • The course revolves around all the different sports, where the basic rules are taught.  The evaluation is based on the development of the skill.

    Students from secondary 1 are integrated with the secondary two leadership students in order to organize activities for the school, such as our Grade 6 Tournament for feeder schools of SWLSB, be involved in nutrition week, and other activities involving planning and leadership.

    The minimum required courses on a 9 day cycle are be 3 or 4 periods in the gym, and a possible period in the classroom when planning is needed

    SECONDARY 2

    The secondary two program is based on leadership and organizational skills.  The program is based on physical education and sports, as well as building and organizing activities for the school population.  The leadership courses are offered 4 times on a 9 day cycle, broken down as follows:  2 or 3 periods in the gym, and 1 or 2 periods in the classroom for theory classes.

    The different activities that secondary 2 students are involved with are as follows:

  • Welcome day for the secondary 1 students with activities outdoors
  • Terry Fox Walk-a-Thon
  • Plan and undertake various Dress Down Days to raise funds for Leadership
  • Plan and organize Movie Lunchtime activities
  • Tournament for the grade 6 feeder schools
  • Weekend camping to promote outdoor education and leadership skills
  • Beginners referee course
  • Intro to first aid course
  • Organizing the lunch sports program “Rent a Gym”, refereeing the games, preparing schedules, preparing the equipment, keeping the standings, etc.
  • Volunteer hours are mandatory with the school as athlete, manager, statistician, etc.
  • Attend events, plan to receive guest speakers, etc.
  • We are proud of the ongoing tradition of academic excellence at MTJHS.  However, we are equally strong in athletics.  This program also conforms to the ministry requirements in terms of promoting physical education and addresses the cross curricular competencies necessary in order to develop within a well –balanced program.  The potential of the leadership program is enormous.  It caters to students who wish to look for a different type of sporting environment, other than the traditional programs being offered.

    There is a cost associated with some activities, however most will require no financing.
