The Council of Commissioners of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board has authorized a public consultation for the Review of school attendance zones and building use in Laval at its June 25, 2026 regular meeting.

Questions, Comments and Suggestions

We recognize that people may wish to share their thoughts before the public meetings take place this fall.

Please use this form to submit ideas, comments, or questions as we prepare the consultation materials and supporting documents.

Please note that this form is intended to help identify ideas, concerns, and questions that should be addressed during the official consultation process. It does not replace participation in the public assemblies, where additional opportunities to provide feedback will be available.

More information, including timelines, frequently asked questions, and consultation materials, will be added to this page early this fall.

Potential Scenarios

As part of the consultation process, several potential scenarios are being explored. These are intended to support discussion and gather feedback. No decisions have been made, and the options may evolve as the process continues.

As a public organization, we also have a responsibility to ensure that our resources are used in a way that best supports students and the services they need.

By taking the time to consult on potential scenarios with our community, we aim to ensure that any future decisions are informed locally and reflect the perspectives of our students, families, staff, and community members.

The scenarios currently being explored include:

  • The relocation of Laurier Competency Development Centre – Vimont (CDC Vimont) to a permanent location following the end of its current lease in June 2027.
  • The future educational services and long-term location of Phoenix Alternative School.
  • Possible changes to attendance zones in East Laval (Duvernay, Vimont, and Auteuil) and West Laval (Fabreville and Chomedey).
  • The review of the use of space in school buildings and educational services in Laval to better align school capacity with current and projected enrolment.
  • Options to strengthen student retention and better respond to the needs expressed by families.
  • The possible development of a specialized program or school model at the secondary level, building on previous consultations regarding the establishment of a school under section 240 of the Education Act.
  • Other ideas and proposals that may emerge through community feedback during the consultation process.

The scenarios represent a range of possibilities and do not indicate a decision regarding any specific school or program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question

Answer

Why is the School Board reviewing schools, programs, and attendance zones in Laval?

Over the past several years, enrolment patterns, program needs, and the use of available space in Laval have evolved. Laval has approximately 600 fewer students than it did six years ago, while other regions of the School Board continue to grow.

The School Board must also identify a long-term location for CDC Vimont, which currently operates in a rented building.

These factors, combined with ongoing analysis of student retention, interboard transfer requests, and feedback from families, have highlighted the need to review how schools, programs, and available space are organized in Laval.

Why did some schools receive a letter about this consultation?

Some schools and centres have been identified because one or more scenarios being considered may affect their attendance zones, their educational services, or the use of their buildings.

Receiving a letter does not mean that a decision has been made regarding your school. The purpose of the consultation process is to present information, gather feedback, and consider different perspectives before any decisions are brought forward.

Is this review solely related to the financial recovery plan?

No. Many of the issues being examined existed before the development of the financial recovery plan and had already been discussed through previous planning exercises. The current financial context has accelerated the timeline, but it did not create the underlying issues being reviewed.

Have any decisions already been made?

No. The purpose of the public consultation process is to present information, share possible scenarios, gather feedback from stakeholders, and support the decision-making process. No decisions have been made.

Why is this review happening now?

The School Board has been examining these issues for several years through long-term planning efforts, including the analysis of enrolment trends, student retention, demographic data, program needs, and feedback from families. The current financial context has accelerated the timeline, but it did not create the underlying issues being reviewed.

Will any changes take effect during the 2026–2027 school year?

No. Any changes resulting from this process would not take effect before July 1, 2027. Students will continue attending their current schools and programs during the 2026-2027 school year.

Why is the public notice being published now if consultations will only happen in the fall?

The timing of the public notice is determined by the requirements of the Education Act and the School Board’s policy regarding school closures and modifications to educational services.

Publishing the notice now allows sufficient time for analysis, consultation, and consideration of feedback before any decisions are made.

When will the public consultations take place?

Two public assemblies will be held in October 2026, and the consultation will be ongoing until December 18, 2026.

OCTOBER 6, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. | Proposals presented will relate to the areas of Duvernay, Vimont, and Auteuil, more specifically: Saint-Vincent, Saint-Paul, and Terry-Fox Elementary Schools, Phoenix Alternative School, and Laurier Competency Development Centre – Vimont (CDC Vimont).

OCTOBER 8, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. | Proposals presented will relate to the areas of Fabreville and Chomedey, more specifically: Souvenir, Twin-Oaks, Our Lady of Peace, and Crestview Elementary Schools.

Additional information regarding the meetings, supporting documents, and presentation materials will be made available in advance.

Why is CDC Vimont part of this discussion?

CDC Vimont currently operates in a rented facility and a long-term location must be identified.

Finding a permanent home for CDC Vimont is one element of a broader review of schools, programs, and available space in Laval.

Was there already a consultation regarding the establishment of a school under section 240 of the Education Act in Laval?

Yes. In 2018, the School Board consulted parents and the community regarding the establishment of a school for the purpose of a special project focused on STEM education. The project received strong support but was placed on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current review provides an opportunity to revisit that work and determine whether elements of the proposal continue to meet the needs of students and families today.

Will these changes affect staff members?

The School Board remains committed to respecting all collective agreements, policies, and consultation requirements. Employees will continue to be informed and consulted through established processes. Any potential impacts would be reviewed carefully in accordance with collective agreements and consultation requirements.

Are schools being closed as part of this process?

Yes, the closing of schools in Laval is being considered, as some buildings are not at full capacity and a new location must be established for CDC Vimont. The consultation will explore a range of scenarios, which may include different options related to programs, student placement, and the use of school buildings. Any decisions will only be made after consultation and review by the Council of Commissioners.

How can parents and community members provide feedback?

Parents, staff, students, and community members can share questions, comments, and ideas through the online form found on this webpage.

Opportunities to provide feedback will be available during the public assemblies and throughout the official consultation period, which will take place from October 2 to December 18, 2026.

Where can I find updates?

Our website will be updated regularly throughout the consultation process.

All public notices, presentation materials, timelines, frequently asked questions, and other relevant documents will be posted here as they become available.
