School-based daycare services sponsored by the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec are provided by the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board at the request of the Governing Board of a school. These services are offered to all Kindergarten to Grade 6 students registered in schools where such a request has been made. Regular users are those children who use day care services at least three days per week, for at least 2 periods per day (in the morning, if need be, at lunch time and after school), and for a maximum of 5 hours per day. A financial contribution of parents is determined by the budgetary rules for school boards as set by the MEQ. Sporadic users may also register, space permitting. In such cases, the fees might be higher, in order to reflect the actual cost of the service. Day care services may also be available on pedagogical days if a sufficient number of students are registered.
School-based daycares operate on a ratio of 20 students to 1 day care staff member. Activities reflect the needs of the users. Parents of students attending day care are encouraged to participate in the day care committee. In the case of a school where child care services are offered, the composition of a Governing Board includes a member of the staff assigned to child care, elected by his or her peers.
