Chairperson’s Statement for Truth and Reconciliation Day
On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Council of Commissioners honours the memory of the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities. This day is a solemn reminder of the historical injustices endured by Indigenous Peoples and the ongoing responsibility we all share in advancing reconciliation.
Although only federally regulated workplaces are closed today to observe this holiday, the Council of Commissioners is proud that the schools and centres of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board are using this occasion to raise students’ awareness to the importance of truth and reconciliation. Education remains one of the most powerful tools to build a more just and inclusive future, and we all have a role to play in this process.
This morning, we proudly raised the Flag of Truth and Reconciliation at our head office, a visible symbol of our respect, tribute, and commitment to reconciliation.
This day also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, a symbol of remembrance and solidarity that reaffirms the principle that “Every Child Matters”. Through this shared act of recognition, we commit to ensuring that the lessons of the past strengthen our resolve to foster respect, understanding, and unity.
On behalf of the Council of Commissioners and the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, I extend our collective respect and commitment as we continue on the journey toward truth and reconciliation.
