BY-ELECTION – ELECTORAL DIVISION 9* | Sunday, March 22, 2026
Following the resignation of the Commissioner representing Electoral Division no. 9 and in accordance with provincial legislation, a by-election must be held when a vacancy occurs more than a year before the next general school election.
At its November 26 meeting, the Council of Commissioners appointed Lorraine Sperano Gauthier as returning officer to oversee this by-election.
*Schools and centres located within this Electoral Division: Genesis Elementary, Jules Verne Elementary, Saint-Paul Elementary, Saint-Vincent Elementary, Phoenix Alternative, and CDC Pont-Viau.
NOMINATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF COMMISSIONER – ELECTORAL DIVISION 9
Nomination papers for this position must be filed at the office of the returning officer on the following days and times, by appointment:
February 10, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
February 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
February 12, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
February 15, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
− candidates must have attained 18 years of age;
− be a Canadian citizen;
− be domiciled anywhere in the territory of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board for at least six (6) months;
− are not under curatorship;
− have not been convicted within the last five years of an offence that is a corrupt electoral or referendum practice under the Act respecting school elections, the Referendum Act (chapter C-64.1), the Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities (chapter E-2.2) or the Elections Act (chapter E-3.3); and
− be registered on the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board electoral list.
DISQUALIFICATION
The following persons are disqualified for election to the office of school commissioner, as per the Act respecting school elections:
− members of the National Assembly;
− members of the Parliament of Canada;
− justices of any court of justice;
− the chief electoral officer and the other members of the Commission de la représentation;
− public servants, except employees within the meaning of the Labour Code (chapter C-27), of the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur (MEES) or of any other department who are assigned to the MEES on a permanent basis;
− an employee of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board;
− election officers of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board;
− a person sentenced to imprisonment (disqualification applies for the term of sentence but ceases if the person obtains a pardon for the offence committed).
If two or more candidates are nominated :

- a poll will be held on March 22, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.;
- an advance poll will be held on March 15, 2026, from noon to 8 p.m.
