Chairperson’s Statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
On behalf of the Council of Commissioners of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, we solemnly commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Today marks 35 years since the tragic events of December 6, 1989, at Polytechnique Montréal, when 14 women were senselessly murdered simply because they were women. This act of violence was not just an attack on these women; it was an attack on gender equality and the right of all individuals to live free from fear.
As educators, leaders, and members of our community, we are deeply committed to fostering safe, inclusive, and equitable spaces for all. This day reminds us of the urgent need to confront and dismantle the systems and attitudes that perpetuate gender-based violence.
We honor the memory of these women and stand in solidarity with all victims and survivors of gender-based violence. Let this day serve as a call to action to reject hatred, promote respect, and empower every individual to reach their full potential.
Together, we must continue to advocate for a future where such violence is eradicated, and where compassion, equality, and understanding prevail.
